IN VITRO FERTILIZATION
(IVF)

WHAT IS IVF?

IVF stands for in vitro fertilization. It’s one of the more widely known types of assisted reproductive technology (ART). IVF works by using a combination of medicines and surgical procedures to help sperm fertilize an egg, and help the fertilized egg implant into the uterus.

IVF has many steps, and it takes several months to complete the whole process. It sometimes works on the first try, but many people need more than 1 round of IVF to get pregnant. IVF definitely increases the chances of pregnancy incase of fertility problems, but there’s no same sucess — everyone’s body is different and IVF won’t work same for everyone.

STEPS OF IVF

  • The first step in IVF is taking fertility medications to help the ovaries produce several eggs that are mature and ready for fertilization.
  • Regular ultrasounds or blood tests are needed to measure hormone levels and keep track of egg production.
  • When ovaries have produced enough mature eggs, then removes the eggs from the body (this is called egg retrieval). Using an ultrasound to see inside the body, the doctor puts a thin, hollow tube through your vagina and into the ovary and follicles to remove the eggs.
  • In a lab, your eggs are mixed with sperm . The eggs and sperm are stored together in a special container, and fertilization happens.
  • About 3-5 days after the egg retrieval, 1 or more embryos are put into your uterus (this is called embryo transfer).
  • After embryo transfer wait 2 weeks for pregnancy test to see whether IVF treatment has been successful or not.

SUCCESS RATE

While younger women have higher chances of IVF success, factors that reduce the chances of IVF success include being an older woman with fewer eggs and the lower quality of an older woman’s eggs. In fact, the live birth IVF success rate for women under 35 who start an IVF cycle is 40 percent.
